Did you know a symptom of switching to vaping can be mouth ulcers? They can be and let me tell you…
They suck! On December 21st I made the switch from analog cigarettes to vaping. First the few days things were great! I was feeling good and not wanting a cigarette. Then December 26th rolled around.
I woke up on Dec.26th and my mouth felt a little odd, I originally chalked it up to a cup of coffee that I had bought when my wife and I were leaving my moms house on Christmas day. This coffee was hot enough to melt steel with, and like an idiot what did I do….took a drink! ( I don’t think I’ve mentioned in my previous posts that I can be a slow learner?)
I originally had thought that maybe I just burnt my mouth a little bit and it would clear up in a couple of days and I would be able to press on with pride. Negative ghost rider this pattern is full (read on)
When the Mouth Ulcers became unbearable…
I figured out something was wrong over the weekend when the pain in mouth only intensified. Drinking a soda was the equivalent to a kick in the…I’ll let you insert your own word there.
It wasn’t until Monday morning when the pain made me man up and do a salt water rinse just to try and get some relief. I did get some relief from this self torture tactic, after I stopped crying like a new born that is.
Monday morning was my breaking point– at work I did a Google search for “vaping and mouth ulcers” and was shocked to see that my new vow to quit smoking actually was the cause of my pain. As it would turn out my entire mouth was an ulcer, the roof of mouth near my throat was an ulcer, my tongue has several ulcers on it, the inside of my top lip was an ulcer and swollen– you the get the idea.
My Google search led me to this page.Did you know that your mouth is basically it’s own little “Eco-system” with a fine balance of good and bad bacteria? From what I’ve gathered the short and skinny of it is that by smoking tobacco it adds an alkalinity to your mouth and over time your mouth adjusts to it to maintain its little “Eco-system”.
When you take that alkalinity away from your mouth it has to readjust, but the kicker is you are now vaping. If your not new to vaping you know that PG/VG can dehydrate you, so inhaling the vapor dehydrates you. As you can see it’s a recipe for disaster and mucho pain! Your natural made “Eco-system” has now become a train wreck.
Here is a list of some symptoms that can also occur from switching to an e-cigarette and taking cigarettes away from the body.
- Mouth Ulcers
- The Quit Zits
- Headache, Nausea, Shakiness
- Sputum, Phlegm
- Heartburn, acid reflux
- Muscle Cramps and Aches
- Night Sweats
- Bleeding gums
- Thyroid issues when quitting tobacco
These are some of the symptoms that have been reported to be connected to quitting smoking and the changes that the body has to go through. What I don’t know is if they are induced by the use of an e-cigarette or if people who quit cold turkey or using other methods can/will endure the same things.
Here as some side effects of vaping….
- Dry Throat, Sore Throat
- Light phlegm
- Headache, racing pulse, inability to sleep
- Intolerance to e-liquid ingredients
- ‘Menthol Mouth’
How to Combat the mouth ulcers…
I found in my reading that these mouth ulcers can last for a few days to a few weeks…my first thought was…HELL NO!
So immediately start looking into how to make these evil things go away. Some people have taken vitamin supplements like vitamin C, Lysine. Myself however, likes to take a more direct and painful method because I’m a knuckle head.
In the mornings I would gargle warm salt water, and that would ease the pain for a few hours, and then I would drink lots and lots of water through out the day while at work.
When I would get home from work I would do another salt water rinse and drink more water.
At night before I went to bed I would use regular (yellow) listerine, and mix a little hydrogen peroxide in it. It tasted horrible and hurt like the dickens, and I would keep in my mouth swishing it around until I just couldn’t bear it anymore and then spit it out.
The hardest thing for me to do was not to rinse my mouth out with water. In all including my “swishing time” lasted about 45 seconds, but it was the most painful 45 seconds of my life.
If your out there and you are reading this and suffering from the mouth ulcers, I’m sorry I know the pain your in. It goes away I promise.
I pray my hardest prayer that this is a one time thing, and I never have to go through this again. I feel so bad for doing this to my body. If I would’ve known 22 years ago I was going to have to go through this amount of pain I would have never picked up that pack of cigarettes.
I hope that my body is able to recover from the other damage that I have done to it from smoking.
In my studies a lot of people said they would smoke a cigarette and the ulcers would calm down, and as tempting as that was to do. I kept saying to myself that I’m not going to smoke anymore, I’m approaching this like an alcoholic has to approach drinking, they can never have that 1 drink.
I knew if I had that 1 cigarette that it would lead me back to smoking because that’s what happened this time last year after 3 weeks of not smoking, I said to myself it’s only 1.
I feel like I’m on the tail end of this ordeal, I’m actually able to drink a soda today without wincing in pain with every sip I take. I’m so glad I decided not to smoke again, I kept telling myself that the lung cancer, chemo, and the pain in my family’s eyes would hurt way more than these ulcers have. I like to think I was right.
If you’ve gone through your own ordeal I would love to hear about it, or if you just have something to say leave me a comment, and share this with your circle of friends.
Take care and vape on!
Happy New Year!
